Alternative Medicine & Therapy

Alternative medicine and therapy has grown in popularity in recent years, and is a departure from conventional medicine, which is more science based. The most popular types of alternative medicine and therapies include homeopathy, herbology, and acupuncture.

There are many critics of alternative medicine and therapy, because of claims that it is not based enough on scientific fact. However, there are also many who strongly believe in alternative medicine and therapy, and who will claim that alternative medicine and therapies can achieves things that traditional medicine can’t.

The creator of homeopathy was Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th Century. It is arguably the most popular of all the alternative medicines and therapies. A complementary medicine, homeopathic treatment involves a natural substance being used to treat a particular medical condition. A basic homeopathic principle is that a large amount of something that can cause harm to a healthy person can, in small doses, help to cure a sick person. The smallness of the dose is key to the effectiveness of the treatment.

Also known as herbalism and herbal medicine, herbology relies on the medicinal benefits of plants to successfully treat various medical conditions. Conventional medicine does use plants, but this is normally by way of a more diluted form, as was the case when aspirin was first developed, for instance. In herbology, plants are normally used in their purest form to treat people.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Acupuncture has an ancient history, and in its oldest form involves the insertion of needles into acupuncture points on the body. The belief is that, because of how the human body relies on connections, a needle in one area of the body can then have a positive impact on another connected area. Acupressure is a variant of acupuncture, but this typically involves the use of hands and elbows rather than needles. The relevant acupressure points are then stimulated through pressure to obtain the desired result.
